Mississippi Highway Patrol Launches Christmas Holiday Travel Safety Initiative

The Mississippi Highway Patrol (MHP) is kicking off its 2024 Christmas Holiday Travel Period on Monday, December 23, at 6:00 a.m., and the operation will run through Thursday, December 26, at midnight.

During this busy travel season, State Troopers will be actively patrolling highways and interstates with a focus on reducing speeding, enforcing traffic laws, and enhancing overall road safety to ensure motorists reach their holiday destinations safely.

Last year, during the 2023 Christmas Holiday Travel Period, MHP investigated 144 crashes, including one fatal crash, and made 78 DUI arrests across state and federal highways.

“Please remember to always remain safe, vigilant, and alert when driving to protect yourself and others on the road during this holiday season,” said Sean Tindell, Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety. “As we gather with family and friends, let’s also take a moment to thank the Mississippi Highway Patrol, all law enforcement agencies, and first responders who are working to keep us safe this Christmas.”

Lt. Colonel James Ivory of the MHP echoed this sentiment, encouraging everyone to prioritize safety during their travels.

“We are committed to enhancing public safety through the diligent enforcement of traffic laws alongside our local partners. Our primary goal is for everyone traveling on Mississippi roadways to reach their destination safely, allowing all to celebrate a Merry Christmas.”

Drivers are urged to exercise caution, remain vigilant, and follow traffic laws to ensure a safe and joyful holiday season. The MHP also reminds motorists to designate a sober driver and avoid distractions while behind the wheel.
