Mississippi is home to quite a variety of bats, with 14 documented species found across the state. However, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks (MDWFP) reports that nine of these species are currently classified as needing conservation attention due to threats such as habitat destruction and White-nose Syndrome.

Bats play a vital role in the ecosystem, primarily relying on forested areas for roosting and foraging. Some species have adapted to using man-made structures such as bat houses, bridges, culverts, and buildings for their habitats.

Among Mississippi’s bat species, the Mexican Free-tailed, Big Brown, and Evening bats are often involved in “nuisance bat” situations, as they frequently inhabit dwellings or frequented structures. The MDWFP emphasizes the importance of proper handling and removal of bats to ensure their safety and to mitigate risks to human residents.

For those dealing with bats, squirrels, raccoons, skunks, or other nuisance wildlife on their property, the MDWFP offers a Nuisance Wildlife Control Operator searchable database. This resource helps connect property owners with professionals who can safely and effectively manage wildlife concerns.
