We have a happy and sad story to share with you. As terrible as it is, sometimes we have to read and be aware of the sad to understand the reality of a situation and understand the changes that need to be made.
As many know, rescuers and rescues are bursting at the seams with unwanted dogs in shelters waiting on their forever home.
Backyard breeding is rampant in the south, specifically in Mississippi.
A no-kill shelter called Animal Rescue Fund, located on West Mayes Street in Jackson shared a recent rescue that will break your heart but also hopefully make you smile with hope by the end.
One of their volunteers, we will call her the Good Samaritan, found a sweet boxer in deplorable, horrific, condition. The dog was so close to death and rescuers said they were not sure how she had survived these cold temperatures lately since she was literally skin and bones.
“Frankly, with all the weather we have had of late, I am surprised that she had not also died. This sweet, gentle boxer only wants love and pets and a soft bed to lie her weary bones upon.” Rescuers stated.
The boxer was left abandoned on a chain in south Jackson. Her buddy, also chained nearby, had tragically starved to death. If one person had done something…even said something, that poor dog may have been alive. Instead, he died an unimaginably cruel death.
Thankfully this Good Samaritan didn’t turn a blind eye to the remaining female dog left standing by her friend. The Good Samaritan rushed the poor girl to ARF where they immediately got her medical attention.
The shelter said the dog has a long road to recovery, but she is receiving little bowls of food frequently to get her stomach used to eating again. When a dog is this close to starvation, the rescue said you cannot just give them a giant bowl of food.
Employees at the shelter named the dog “Mercy Grace”. Somehow Mercy Grace still loves people…after all that she endured. That is the magic of dogs, they love unconditionally…something we humans aren’t often very good at.

Please consider donating to Mercy Grace’s care and to the other hundreds of dogs this shelter houses and cares for as they wait to get adopted.
The shelter ended the post by saying,
“Thank you for helping these animals who deserve better.”
What a true statement. These animals don’t ask to be chained up and forgotten about. They don’t ask to be shut into tiny kennels or constantly bred. They don’t ask to be thrown into a fighting ring to make their owner money by fighting for their lives.
They will never have a voice unless we give them one.
