January is an extremely hard month for animal rescues, especially in Mississippi with few laws and lots of backyard breeding and animal neglect.

One local rescue, Cheshire Abbey, shared a story on social media of a rescue that has been years in the making.

Chrissy Cheshire posted about a dog that she encountered during another rescue and she asked and begged the owner to give the dog to her. He lived every day in a pen inside of a fence.

Cheshire said that even though January is the most challenging month with urgent calls for help coming in every day, she jumped at the chance to finally get this sweet dog in the pen.

The owner surrendered him to her at the end of 2024 and he is finally safe and ready for his second chance at life.

The dog’s name is Popeye. He has the sweetest face and beautiful coloring. Popeye is so lovable and affectionate and spent 6 years of his life confined to a small pen in South Jackson, unable to see the world beyond a wooden fence.

Now, Popeye is experiencing life in a way he never has before. For the first time, he knows love, comfort, clean bedding, and regular meals.

He understandably has to get used to being out in the world and he desperately craves human affection. He clings to anyone who is nearby and needs constant reassurance that he won’t be locked in a pen again and left.

Cheshire said Popeye will need a loving home where he can feel safe and receive gentle training to help him adjust.

Popeye is already neutered and has been started on heartworm treatment. His vet care has cost $612 so far if anybody wants to help the Abbey pay for his bill.

“January has been an endless stream of calls for help, and we are spread thin,” said Cheshire. “Every single day, there’s an urgent need. Popeye is one of many animals counting on us, and we’re asking the community to come forward and help however they can—whether it’s donating or offering a forever home for Popeye.”

Donations can be made via Venmo (@cheshireabbey) or PayPal ([email protected]). The organization is also looking for a kind and patient family to adopt Popeye and give him the life he deserves.

“This sweet boy has endured so much, and now he just wants to be loved and cared for,” they added. “Please help us give him that chance.”
