The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) is warning residents to beware of a text message scam claiming they owe toll road fees to the state.
In a public announcement Tuesday, MDOT made it clear: Mississippi does not have any toll roads—and the agency does not collect toll fees on behalf of other states either.
“If you receive a message saying you owe money for toll road use in Mississippi, do not click any links, do not reply, and do not send payment,” MDOT officials stated. “Mississippi has zero toll roads—nada, zilch, none.”
The department emphasized that this scam is designed to trick people into handing over personal or financial information. Officials urge anyone who receives such messages to delete them immediately and report suspicious texts to the appropriate authorities.
“Don’t let a scam take its ‘toll’ on you,” MDOT added in a warning shared across social media.
