Choctaw Indian Princess Nalani LuzMaria Thompson Talks About the Significance of Her Dress

MERIDIAN, Miss (Queen City Newsfeed) – 2023-2024 Choctaw Indian Princess Nalani LuzMaria Thompson stopped by our studios and talked about the significance of her dress.

“Basically this dress, I’ll start with the dress, it was made by my late, great grandmother, and it was the last dress she made about 18 years ago. This bead set that I’m wearing is an almost 20-year-old bead set that was made by my mother, her mother, and her mother. So, it’s a 3 generational set. So it’s really cool. If you notice, you can see diamonds all over the trim of my apron, the trim of my dress, really just anywhere. You can see it on my sash. That represents the diamond back rattle snake, because it protected our crops from rodents and pests basically. So we give honor to that specific animal. If you look at my medallion, mine is a seven point sun star design, but some people use 8 point star or 9 point star, and that basically just represents the sun as we honor nature too. Then, if you look, yep it’s on here, stick ball sticks and stick ball. Kapucha or ishtaboli which is stick ball. We have our annual tournament that will take place, starting July 2nd,” said Princess Nalani.
