JACKSON, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – The Mississippi Public Service Commission has given the green light for a new area code to be assigned to the existing 662 area code.

The newly approved area code will be 471. The decision to introduce a new area code comes in response to the projected exhaustion of numbering resources for the 662 area code by the third quarter of 2026, as stated by the North American Numbering Plan Administrator (NANPA).

Current customers with 662 telephone numbers will not be affected and can retain their existing numbers. However, new customers or those requesting additional lines may be assigned the new 471 area code once it becomes active.

To make local calls, customers will still need to dial the full 10-digit number, including the area code and the seven-digit phone number.

The 471 area code will cover all counties in the Public Service Commission Northern District, including Alcorn, Attala, Benton, Calhoun, Carroll, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Clay, Coahoma, Desoto, Grenada, Itawamba, Lafayette, Lee, Leflore, Lowndes, Marshall, Montgomery, Monroe, Oktibbeha, Panola, Pontotoc, Prentiss, Quitman, Tallahatchie, Tate, Tippah, Tishomingo, Tunica, Union, Webster, Winston, and Yalobusha.

Additionally, the 471 area code will serve a significant portion of the Public Service Commission Central District, encompassing Holmes, Humphreys, Issaquena, parts of Kemper, Noxubee, Sharkey, Sunflower, Washington, and Yazoo counties.

For now, existing customers do not need to make any changes. More updates will be provided as the implementation process commences in late 2025 or early 2026.
