MERIDIAN, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – The Distinguished Young Women of Mississippi hosted their autograph signing party at Belle G in Downtown Meridian Tuesday night at 4:30.
Community members, parents, host moms, and supporters were able to line up and get their program signed by each of the Distinguished Young Women.
Event Chairperson Betsy Brewer said events like this are important for other young girls in the community.
“These young ladies that are participating in this program this week, these are the brightest young ladies in our state. They are very well-rounded. They are intelligent. They are talented, and they are distinguished. So it’s really important that, especially the young girls in our community, the young girls that are surrounding them everyday come and see them in their element when they are getting to shine and really be their best selves,” said Brewer.
Distinguished Young Women is a national program based in Mobile, Alabama.
It was formerly known as Junior Miss and is for Junior girls going into their Senior year of High School.
Brewer said the program has a few core elements.
“There’s five aspects that they’re really focused on which is to be healthy, be involved, be responsible, be studious, and to be ambitious,” said Brewer.
Today’s party doesn’t end here. There’s a much bigger celebration happening as well.
“Later tonight, we’re going to go to Northwood Country Club for a prom party, a red carpet party, and the girls get to wear their prom dresses and get their makeup and hair done up, and they will dance and eat and sing and just have a big ole party. It’s just girls, so they really get to let loose and have fun,” said Brewer.
Preliminary competitions will be Thursday and Friday night with the finale Saturday night.
That’s when the top ten will be named as well as this year’s Distinguished Young Woman.
“They’re so talented and so bright. I mean, they are the future of our state and of our country honestly. They are our future leaders. So, we want all the support we can get for them. We’re really proud of these girls,” said Brewer.
