Short Play “Who is Susie Glover” Performed at Meridian Railroad Museum

MERIDIAN, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – The Meridian Railroad Museum hosted the short play “Who Is Susie Glover” Saturday morning at 10 am.

The vignette is written by Anne Mckee who researched the historical figure Susie Glover with Greg Hatcher.

Glover worked as a baggage handler at the railroad station in Meridian from about 1930 to about 1945.

“After about five years, she became a train announcer, and her job was to call out the train numbers, train destinations, arrival times, and her voice didn’t carry very well. So, she decided to sing out that information, and she had a beautiful alto voice, and she become very famous, at least regionally, and people would come to Meridian just to hear her sing,” said Alan Brown, a professor of English and Folklore at the University of West Alabama.

“This is one person. One African American lady during a depression who didn’t have many rights at all, who worked really really hard here, and we’re still talking about her. She left a lasting impression in these 15 years that she was here, and that’s the kind of story that I think we need to tell over and over again,” said Brown.

The play was originally performed at WLBT in Jackson back in February.

This was the second showing.
