LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – In a decisive move towards enhancing educational opportunities for its students, the Lauderdale County School District (LCSD) has finalized plans for its inaugural Career and Technical Education (CTE) Center. This milestone marks a significant step forward for the district, reaffirming its commitment to preparing students for success in high-demand fields.
Initially proposed as a bond referendum in fall 2023, the project garnered community support after thorough deliberation and adjustments to address citizen concerns. The school board’s recent approval of the next phase sets the stage for the refurbishment of the designated site at the former Peavey Service Warranty Building on Highway 11/80, situated in East Meridian’s industrial park.
The comprehensive renovation project will encompass interior construction and essential roof repairs to ensure a safe and modern learning environment. The facility will house four distinct pathways aimed at equipping students with the skills necessary for thriving careers:
- Health & Human Services: Featuring programs in Law & Public Safety.
- Education, Arts & Communications: Tailored to emerging needs in these fields.
- STEM, Industrial, Construction, and Manufacturing: Highlighting innovative initiatives like the Ag Power Program in collaboration with Kubota.
- Business Management, Finance, and Administration: Expanding to meet evolving industry demands.
“We’ll be able to offer these programs to all of our students,” remarked Rob Smith, LCSD CTE Director, emphasizing the center’s role in addressing local industry needs. “With plans for adding more programs, this center will be able to meet the training needs of current and new industries to the area.”
The ambitious timeline for the project spans 15 months, with a targeted full opening in August 2026, potentially earlier. Funding, primarily sourced from state allocations totaling $8 million, has been allocated for construction and development. Initial funds have already been utilized for preliminary tasks such as deconstruction, permits, and architectural planning. The remaining state funds will ensure the project’s timely completion to uphold educational excellence standards.
Dr. John-Mark Cain, LCSD Superintendent, expressed enthusiasm about the center’s potential impact, stating, “We’re excited to provide our students opportunities to thrive in a competitive workforce.”
The Lauderdale County School District anticipates celebrating the grand opening of its pioneering CTE Center, a testament to its ongoing commitment to empowering students through innovative educational initiatives.
