Community Members Petition for Street in Meridian to be Named After Elliot Street

MERIDIAN, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – Community members in Meridian have started a petition to rename the portion of 5th Street that runs in front of the MSU Riley Center, or portions of 6th street, in honor of the late Elliott Street– a well known Meridian actor and preservationist.

Street had a major hand in restoring the Threefoot Building, the MSU Riley Center, and the Temple Theater among others.

Street died in June of this year at the age of 80 after a battle with Leukemia.

He led a successful career in Hollywood as an actor in the 70s and 80s and more recently appeared in films like “Last Vegas” with Michael Douglas and Morgan Freeman.

He also worked as an instructor at Meridian High and Meridian Community College.

Street formed the teen acting troupe the Merrystreet Players and was also a big part of the Rails to Reels Film Festival among other projects.

In his later years, Street became very active in preserving historic landmarks in Meridian– forming the Threefoot Preservation Society which helped re-open the hotel in 2021.

Now, almost two months after his passing, community members wish to honor his legacy with a street named after him.

Organizers said they’d like for a street near one of the buildings he was instrumental in saving to be named after him.

So far, the petition has gained over 100 signatures. Organizers say at least 200 more signatures are needed.
