MERIDIAN, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – Downtown Meridian is undergoing significant upgrades to its sewer infrastructure as Hemphill Construction Company undertakes a crucial maintenance project. The work, which involves rehabilitating sanitary sewer pipes and manholes at various city locations, is part of a broader effort to enhance the city’s sewer system.
Public Works Director David Hodge announced that the project is funded through the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) Municipality and County Water Infrastructure Grant Program, a key component of the American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA). This funding is aimed at improving water and sewer infrastructure across the state.
The rehabilitation project will include some pipe replacements, but the bulk of the work will utilize a technique known as cured-in-place pipe lining (CIPPL). This method involves inserting a resin-saturated felt tube into the existing pipes. The resin is then cured using steam or hot water, forming a seamless, rigid liner inside the old pipe. This innovative approach helps to prevent groundwater infiltration and reduces the risk of pipe collapses.
As the project progresses, residents and businesses in the affected areas should expect temporary disruptions. The city’s efforts aim to enhance the reliability and efficiency of the sewer system, ensuring long-term improvements for the community.
