Former Quitman High School Bookkeeper Arrested for Embezzlement

JACKSON, Miss. — Shad White, Mississippi’s State Auditor, has announced the arrest of Memory Smith, the former bookkeeper for Quitman High School, on charges of embezzlement.

Smith is alleged to have misappropriated funds from the school’s activity account, using the money for her personal gain. The arrest follows an investigation by the State Auditor’s Special Agents, who discovered discrepancies in the school’s financial records.

State Auditor Shad White commended the investigative team for their diligence in exposing the fraud. “Our office maintains a strict zero-tolerance stance on fraudulent activities,” White stated. “We are committed to ensuring that taxpayer dollars are used appropriately and will continue our efforts to uphold financial integrity.”

If convicted, Smith could face a penalty of up to $5,000 in fines and a maximum prison term of 20 years. It is important to note that all individuals charged are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

The State Auditor’s Office encourages the public to report suspected fraud. Reports can be submitted online through the Auditor’s website or by calling 1-(800)-321-1275 during business hours.
