Lauderdale County Grand Jury Calls for Facility Upgrades and Bus Repairs

LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – In its final report, the August 2024 Grand Jury of Lauderdale County highlighted several pressing issues and made recommendations following a three-day session. The jury examined 21 witnesses, returned 108 true bills of indictment, and issued 11 no true bills.

The Grand Jury’s review of the Lauderdale County Detention Facility revealed significant maintenance concerns. During their tour, jurors noted extensive water damage, with floors having been temporarily repaired with steel plates that are now causing rust and stickiness. Corrosion was also observed on the ceiling’s sprinkler system, and ceiling tiles are in need of replacement. In response, the Grand Jury has recommended that the Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors plan for the construction of a new detention facility to address these ongoing issues.

In addition, the Grand Jury addressed concerns about the county’s juror transportation system. They recommended immediate inspection and repair of the juror transport bus, citing non-functional air conditioning, worn-out shocks, and a wasp infestation as key issues.

The report was officially submitted on August 28, 2024.
