Meridian Public School District Hosts Ribbon Cutting for New Jumbotron

MERIDIAN, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – The Meridian Public School District hosted a ribbon cutting ceremony for the new Jumbotron and Scoreboard at Ray Stadium Thursday at 10 a.m.

This is the first time the scoreboard has been updated in 30 years.

The Jumbotron hos the biggest frame in the state and will have tons of features, including instant replay.

“The big plays and touchdowns will be replayed, and maybe some of the others will be replayed. You have what you call ‘Hero Shots’ where you will pretty much be able to get right in the face of whether it’s our football players, whether it’s our cheerleaders, whether it’s the fans and so forth,” said Athletic Director Cheyenne Trussell.

Meridian High School students will also get hands-on experience with operating the Jumbotron.

“We’ve been fortunate enough to be able to add a media arts course at Meridian High School and those students are being trained to operate the Jumbotron and operate the cameras that will be used and the technology, so we’re real excited on what the students will be learning,” said Director of Arts Antonio Altman. “I think it’s great experience for the students. Some of them may go on to do this as a career, or some of them may, you know in radio and television, and also being able to go on and pursue it in college if they want to take it more in depth.”

Trussell said the total cost of the new Jumbotron is somewhere between $530,000 and $540,000.

Local sponsors have signed a 5 year agreement which will yield about $300,000 over that time period.
