MERIDIAN, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – The Meridian Public School District (MPSD) continues to make significant strides in academic achievement, maintaining its strong performance in the 2023-2024 Accountability Ratings released by the Mississippi Department of Education on Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2024.
MPSD reported notable increases in proficiency across English Language Arts (ELA), Math, and Science. The district also saw improvements in College and Career Readiness metrics and recorded a double-digit performance increase among the English Language Learner (ELL) subgroup.
“I applaud our students, teachers, staff, parents, and community for their hard work in helping reach these gains,” said Dr. Amy Carter, MPSD Superintendent. “Moving forward our focus remains on sustaining this momentum, improving even further, and ensuring every student is set up for success in academics and life.”
Mississippi’s school grading system evaluates various indicators, including student performance on the Mississippi Academic Assessment Program (MAAP) tests for ELA and Math in grades 3-8 and high school. The system also assesses year-to-year improvement, four-year graduation rates, ACT performance, and advanced coursework, as well as progress for English learners and the lowest-achieving students.
School Performance Highlights:
- Parkview Elementary: Gained 23 points, maintaining its B rating as a high-performing school.
- Poplar Springs Elementary: Improved by 26 points, raising its rating from a C to a B.
- Magnolia Middle School: Achieved a 40-point gain, improving its overall rating to a C.
- Northwest Middle School: Gained 14 points, continuing its progress and maintaining its current rating.
- West Hills Elementary: Consistent in its performance, retaining its B rating as a high-performing school.
- Meridian High School and Crestwood Elementary: Both maintained successful school ratings, contributing to the district’s overall achievement.
- Carver Elementary: Fell just two points short of achieving a successful rating.
The 2023-2024 school year marked the first time students from TJ Harris Elementary and Oakland Heights Elementary joined Crestwood Elementary and the newly reopened G.W. Carver Elementary.
MPSD’s upward trend reflects the collaborative efforts of the community, staff, and students. The district remains dedicated to promoting both academic success and personal growth, ensuring students are well-prepared for their future.
