Brent Funderburk’s “Path of Light” on Display at Meridian Museum of Art

MERIDIAN, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – The Meridian Museum of Art will showcase Brent Funderburk’s “Path of Light,” an exhibition of over 100 works spanning the artist’s 45-year career, beginning October 4, 2024.

The opening reception will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the museum, located at 628 25th Avenue.

Known for his vibrant watermedia paintings, Funderburk is a Mississippi Governor’s Arts Award recipient and William L. Giles Distinguished Professor Emeritus at Mississippi State University, where he taught for 36 years.

The North Carolina native is celebrated for his contributions to both art and education, having served at three universities over a 40-year career.

The exhibit includes 105 works, with over 40 pieces created in the last two years and 70 works from the past six years, since Funderburk’s retirement from full-time teaching in 2018.

The display features a variety of mediums, including watercolor, acrylic, charcoal, and pastel, with many works being publicly exhibited for the first time.

Numerous pieces are on loan from private and public collections.

In addition to the exhibit, Funderburk will present an artist talk, “Inside Nature: Chasing the Path of Light Through Watercolor,” at the Mississippi Arts and Entertainment Experience (The MAX) on October 3 at 5:00 p.m.

The lecture will explore the significance of watercolor in art history and the personal discoveries it has revealed throughout Funderburk’s artistic journey.

“The mysterious power and subtle majesty of watercolor in art history and unexpected discoveries the medium has illuminated throughout my life,” Funderburk said, will be the focus of his public talk.

Meridian Museum of Art is supported by its members and patrons, the city of Meridian, the Phil
Hardin Foundation, the Mississippi Arts Commission, the Riley Foundation, the Community
Foundation of East Mississippi, and the Paul and Sherry Broadhead Foundation.

Admission to the museum is free, and public hours are Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
