GULFPORT, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – A team of more than 260 Mississippi Power line crew members, support staff, and contractor resources is en route to Georgia to assist in power restoration efforts as Hurricane Helene approaches.
The storm team is responding to a call from Georgia Power as the major hurricane is expected to make landfall in Florida’s Big Bend area and impact South Georgia as early as Thursday evening.
Crews departed from Mississippi Power’s service area early Wednesday, prepared to support restoration efforts for Georgia Power customers affected by the storm.
“While our service territory isn’t forecasted to see any impacts from Helene, we understand what Georgia residents are preparing for and are ready to help,” said Mississippi Power Storm Director Stephen Schruff. “Georgia crews helped our customers after Hurricane Francine a few weeks ago, so we are happy to answer the call this time.”
Mississippi Power is part of a mutual assistance program, collaborating with other utility companies to restore service after natural disasters.
This season, Mississippi Power crews have already traveled to Georgia and Texas to support hurricane recovery efforts.
Earlier this month, the company worked across Southeast Mississippi, with support from Georgia Power, to restore power following Hurricane Francine.
“As our storm team focuses on traveling safely and restoring service to Georgia residents, we’ll continue to meet our customers’ needs here at home,” Schruff added. “These back-to-back storms are a reminder that we’re in the busiest time of year for tropical weather. We hope our customers stay safe and aware of changing weather conditions.”
Mississippi Power, a subsidiary of Southern Company, provides energy to more than 192,000 customers in 23 southeast Mississippi counties.
