MERIDIAN, Miss. (WTOK) – A Meridian city councilwoman is facing a domestic violence charge after her husband was arrested for the same charge in August.
Ty Bell, the councilwoman for Ward 5 in Meridian, was on the city of Meridian’s Arrest Docket on Monday, October 28, for a domestic violence charge. Ty Bell says she was never arrested and is being falsely accused. She said the charge is retaliation from her husband after he was arrested in August for the same charge.
MPD says a person might not ever be put in handcuffs or in the back of the cop car to be considered arrested, all someone has to do to be considered arrested is to face a charge by the department.
News 11 sat down with the councilwoman to learn more about the situation.
“It’s disheartening. I was on the docket for something that I did not do; it did not happen. I was not arrested. I want to make that very clear. It was a situation that happened in August and out of out of retaliation, I would say based off 4 days before our court date, which was October the 15th. On October the 11th. I guess the person that has been involved made a false statement and to retaliate of four days before our court date to prolong that court situation,” said Ty Bell.
She continues to say:
“I was never put in jail. Let’s make that clear. I was actually on October the 25th. I think that’s when the arrest document docket said that I was actually arrested. I was being in the community, helping with Halloween festivals and, being with the children and doing those type things as far as. It was brought to my attention that that I was falsely accused of it, that I was served, and in that serving document, the. The officer did mention, as well as the other people’s attorneys or whatever said, that this is a normal thing when they’re trying to retaliate, so oh, you do it to me. I’m going to do it to you. But in my case, it was definitely done to me. I have the pictures, I have witnesses,” said Ty Bell.
Lindsey said that she has not had any communication with her husband since the incident in August and has no plans to resign from city council, and still plans to run for a seat in city government.
“Knowing that someone could use the system to turn around and retaliation or do anything that can affect someone’s life is something that I really want to advocate for with a better law enforcement system or better Judicial system. It saddens me that it was even reported that I’ve done something that I truly would never have done. And if it happens to me, it’s probably happen. Well more than likely definitely has happened to so many residents and citizens around them in our community, and I want to stand up for them to let justice be served but serve it correctly and to the person that you know needs to have justice served to,” said Ty Bell.
