LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – The November 2024 Grand Jury for Lauderdale County has concluded its term and issued a report detailing its investigations and recommendations, including a call for a new detention facility in the county.
The Grand Jury, which met for three days, examined 26 witnesses and returned 122 true bills of indictment. Three cases resulted in no true bills.
One of the key findings of the Grand Jury was the condition of the Lauderdale County Detention Facility. After a tour of the men’s side of the facility, the jury reported that the building is in dire need of updates and repairs. As a result, the Grand Jury has recommended that the Lauderdale County Board of Supervisors begin planning for the construction of a new detention facility.
The report was filed with the Circuit Court on November 20, 2024. William Jolly, the Foreperson of the Grand Jury, affirmed that the indictments presented were agreed upon by at least 12 members of the jury, and that no fewer than 15 members were present during all deliberations.
The Grand Jury’s recommendations aim to address concerns about the current state of the county’s detention infrastructure, with hopes of improving conditions for both inmates and staff.
