Fatal Fire in Clarke County Ruled Accidental

CLARKE COUNTY, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – A fatal fire that claimed the life of a Quitman man on Saturday, November 23, has been ruled accidental, according to Clarke County Fire Investigator Shane Harper. The State of Mississippi Fire Marshal’s Office, which assisted in the investigation, determined that the fire started in the kitchen of the mobile home.

According to Clarke County Hot Topics, the blaze occurred around 8:20 p.m. in the 2400 block of Highway 513. Investigators found that the fire began when a pan of grease was left unattended on the stove. It appears that the victim, 44-year-old Tyrone Adams, had been preparing a meal when the fire started. Adams is believed to have gone to the bedroom at the north end of the mobile home and fell asleep while the fire continued to burn.

The exact cause of death has not yet been officially released, but it is believed Adams succumbed to smoke inhalation. Clarke County Coroner David Bonner has ordered a full toxicology report to aid in the investigation.

Emergency responders, including members of the Quitman Police Department, Quitman Fire Department, and Clarke County EMS, were dispatched to the scene after a passerby called 911 to report smoke coming from the mobile home. Upon arrival, responders confirmed that someone was likely inside the burning home. Officer Randy Harper of the Quitman Police Department entered the smoke-filled trailer and located Adams in the bedroom. He was quickly rescued by firefighter Logan Griffin, who removed Adams from the home. Despite life-saving efforts by first responders, Adams was pronounced dead at H.C. Watkins Emergency Room.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office continues to investigate the cause of the fire, but initial findings suggest that it started in the kitchen.
