MERIDIAN, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – Johnny Lee Thomas, 29, was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole after being convicted of the 2021 first-degree murder of Garland Jai Murray Jr. in Meridian. The sentence was handed down by Circuit Court Judge Charles Wright following a three-day trial.
Thomas, a habitual offender with prior felony drug convictions, was found guilty of killing Murray on August 7, 2021, at an apartment complex in Meridian. The case was investigated by the Meridian Police Department, and Thomas was arrested on August 16, 2021. He was indicted in January 2023 for first-degree murder.
During the trial, the State of Mississippi presented evidence of Thomas’ habitual offender status under Mississippi Code § 99-19-81, which led to the imposition of the life sentence.
District Attorney Kassie Coleman, who prosecuted the case, addressed the impact of the verdict in a statement. “Mr. Murray’s death was the result of senseless gun violence that will not be tolerated in our community. Today’s verdict and sentencing should serve as notice for those who choose to use guns to harm others. Gun violence will not be tolerated and the District Attorney’s Office will seek the maximum sentence to those who choose to shoot and harm others. I appreciate Mr. Murray’s family who has remained patient as we pursued this conviction.”
The prosecution of the case was handled by Coleman and Assistant District Attorney Tommy Whitfield. The Meridian Police Department led the investigation into the killing.
Murray’s parents, Garland Murray Sr. and Janice Murray, have expressed their deep appreciation for the Meridian Police Department and the investigators who worked on the case.
Thomas, who will serve his sentence in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections, will not be eligible for parole due to his status as a habitual offender.
