According to WDAM, the suspect who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound on Wednesday in Smith County was a former Meridian police officer.
He was being arrested for alleged child sex crimes.
Smith County Sheriff Joel Houston told WDAM that the suspect was 66-year-old Wilburn May.
MBI said that U.S. Marshals were trying to serve May with an arrest warrant for 16 counts of battery on a child.
WDAM said the alleged crimes happened in Lauderdale County.
