MERIDIAN, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – The Meridian Fire Department responded to a structure fire early Tuesday morning, February 18, around 4:30 a.m. at the corner of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive and 19th Street.
Fire Chief Michael Evans indicated that the building involved in the fire appeared to be abandoned and that the blaze was likely caused by homeless individuals seeking warmth during the recent cold weather.
The fire was so intense that it began to melt the siding of nearby homes. Firefighters focused on protecting those structures before eventually bringing the main fire under control.
No injuries were reported.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, with officials continuing to assess the situation. The fire department urges residents to take precautions with heating sources during the ongoing cold snap.
