Community Rallies for Magnolia Cemetery Restoration in Meridian

MERIDIAN, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – Volunteers gathered early Saturday morning at Magnolia Cemetery for a large-scale clean-up effort aimed at preserving one of Meridian’s oldest historic sites. The initiative was led by the newly formed Magnolia Cemetery Volunteer Board.

Established 126 years ago, Magnolia Cemetery is the final resting place of notable figures including U.S. Congressman G.V. “Sonny” Montgomery and civil rights leader Paul Davis. With roads recently repaved thanks to community backing, the next phase of the project requires an additional $50,000 by fall to seal and protect the improvements.

The restoration is being coordinated in partnership with the Community Foundation of East Mississippi. Local organizations such as the Boys & Girls Club, VFW Posts 79 and 12124, Stronger Together, NAS Meridian, Dusty Social Service Club, and DEBS have also joined the effort to honor the cemetery’s legacy.

Organizers are encouraging the public to get involved. Donations and more information can be found at magnoliameridian.com.
