MERIDIAN, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – The MCC Pantry Food Drive is back at Meridian Community College. This year, it comes with a friendly contest and a trophy on the line. Donations are due Thursday, Nov. 12.

The Margaret Taylor Blalock Resource Center is hosting the contest. Faculty, staff, students and campus groups can all join. Teams will collect food and household items for the MCC Pantry. The pantry helps students in need.

Who can take part

Any group on campus can form a team. That includes departments, programs, sports teams, student clubs and groups of friends.

The team that brings in the most donations wins the Pantry Food Drive Trophy. The winners also get a basket of holiday snacks and treats. Plus, they earn bragging rights across campus.

Can Adult Education keep its streak?

MCC’s Adult Education team has won the trophy three years in a row. Last fall, the group gave more than 600 items, the college said.

So this year’s contest will show if the champs can hold on to their title. If not, a new team will take the top spot.

What to bring

The pantry needs canned fruit, packaged meats and soups. It also needs pasta sauce, peanut butter and jelly. Shelf stable milk, easy meals, snacks and basic household supplies are on the list too.

Holiday meal items are welcome as well. These include stuffing, gravy, sweet potatoes and pie filling.

However, the pantry does not need green beans or peas right now.

Why it matters

The MCC Pantry gives students food and everyday items they need. It is part of the Margaret Taylor Blalock Resource Center. The center is on the ground floor of the L.O. Todd/Billy C. Beal Student Success Center, according to MCC.

Wendy Cox, the college’s support services coordinator, runs the center. Last year, she said the fall drive is one of the most important times for gifts. That is because students often need extra help before and after the holiday break.

So every item counts. That is true whether you bring a few cans or lead a drive for your whole department.
