UNION, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – Union High School Parent Night is set for Monday, November 2. The event is for parents of sophomores and juniors. It starts at 6 p.m. in the school cafeteria.
Union High School says the evening will help families support their students. Parents will get answers about graduation, testing and college plans. They can also ask their own questions.
What parents will learn
The school shared a list of topics on a flyer for the event. First, staff will review what students need to graduate. They will also go over diploma endorsement options.
In Mississippi, every student works toward a traditional diploma. However, students can add an endorsement by taking extra classes. The three choices are academic, distinguished academic, and career and technical, Mississippi Today reported when the state set up the plan.
These choices can matter after high school. For example, students who earn an academic or distinguished academic endorsement get into any of the state’s public universities, according to Jackson Public Schools.
ACT testing and college plans
Next, staff will talk about the ACT. They plan to cover test dates, tips to get ready and what to expect on test day.
This part is key for juniors. That is because Mississippi gives the ACT free to public school juniors. Students take it at school during the spring.
After that, the group will talk about getting ready for college. That includes how to apply, how to plan college visits and what steps come next.
Help for parents, too
The night is not only about grades and tests. Staff will also share tips on how to help a child at this age. They plan to offer support and advice for this stage of life.
Finally, the school will point parents to more resources. There will also be time for questions.
The flyer sums up the goal in one line: “Together, we can help our students reach their goals!”
