Besides Hinds County deputy, wife and her friend shot Sunday night

Rumors have swirled around the events of Sunday night that resulted in a beloved Hinds County deputy’s death at the hands of a man who, by all appearances, did not want his wife to leave him.

Sheriff Tyree Jones said Monday morning that besides Deputy Martin Shields, 37, who was killed when Eric Brown, 42, opened fire on him as he helped escort a woman to get her things from the home she shared with him, there were two others shot and injured.

Initial reports had indicated that one of those was another deputy, but Jones corrected the record Monday.

“The deceased individual inside of the residence at 15323 Midway Rd. has been identified as Eric Brown by MS Bureau of Investigations. His cause of death is currently under investigation,” Jones posted on Facebook. “Brown is believed to be suspected in the death of fallen Deputy Martin Shields, Jr., and the shooting of his wife (Brown) and a female accomplice at this location. The wife and female accomplice are both stable at this time.”

Jones clarified to say the other female was a friend of the wife.

This is a developing story.
