LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – Crews from Mississippi Power and East Mississippi Electric Power Association (EMEPA) have been working around the clock to restore power after severe storms swept through the state Saturday night, leaving thousands without electricity.
Mississippi Power crews began working through the night to address widespread outages. The utility thanked customers for their patience in a Facebook post: “Our crews are hard at work safely restoring power for our customers! Thank you for your patience as we get the lights back on.”
The company also issued a safety reminder, urging people to avoid downed power lines, stating: “Always assume they’re energized.”
Mississippi Power crews also assisted Alabama Power in Camden, Alabama, following the storm, further highlighting the region’s cooperative restoration efforts.
At East Mississippi Electric Power Association, restoration work was underway early Sunday. By 9 a.m., the co-op had reduced outages from a peak of more than 15,000 to around 6,935. Crews had located more than 30 broken poles, a number that continued to rise. The remaining outages were concentrated in Kemper, Lauderdale, Clarke, and Newton counties.
EMEPA activated mutual aid resources, bringing in additional crews from Coast Electric, Alcorn County Electric Power Association, and contractors to bolster their restoration efforts. By Sunday afternoon, power had been restored to over 5,160 members, but about 1,775 customers remained without electricity.
By 3 p.m., the co-op reported that the number of broken poles had increased to 43. As of Sunday evening, 673 members were still without power. EMEPA crews were set to resume work at daybreak after a much-needed rest.
“We are thankful for your patience, prayers, and encouragement throughout the day,” EMEPA wrote in a Facebook update.
Both utilities continue to urge the public to stay cautious around downed power lines and remain patient as crews work to restore full service. Updates on restoration efforts can be found on their social media pages.
