Meridian launches Mayor’s Youth Council to empower future leaders

MERIDIAN, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – The City of Meridian has announced the creation of the Mayor’s Youth Council, a new program designed to engage high school students in civic leadership and community service.

Open to students in grades 9–12 who live within the city limits, the Mayor’s Youth Council (MYC) will include up to five student representatives from each of Meridian’s five wards, for a total of 25 members. Applications are due by Dec. 1, 2025.

Selected students will be officially appointed during a Meridian City Council meeting and will begin serving as youth representatives for their wards. Members will attend council meetings, take part in community service projects, and meet regularly with city leaders to learn how local government operates.

“The Meridian Youth Council gives our students a real seat at the table,” said Mayor Percy Bland. “We’re proud to invest in the next generation of leaders whose ideas and energy will shape our city’s future.”

Chief Administrative Officer Craig Hitt said the initiative is designed to bridge civic education with hands-on experience.

“This council connects classroom learning with civic action,” Hitt said. “Our goal is to help students develop practical leadership skills while serving their neighborhoods and understanding how city government works.”

Applications and additional details are available through the Meridian City Clerk and Communications offices.
