CARA Reminds Pet Owners To Take Precautions Ahead of New Year’s Eve

JACKSON — Animal advocates are urging pet owners to take extra precautions ahead of New Year’s Eve, warning that more pets go missing on the holiday than on most other days of the year.

CARA, a large no-kill shelter in Mississippi reminded that fireworks and loud celebrations can cause pets to panic and bolt, slipping out doors, squeezing through small gaps in fences, or breaking loose from yards. Social media is often flooded with lost pet posts in the hours surrounding the holiday, advocates said.

This year, they say the risk is higher because of dangerously cold temperatures. Pets that get loose may become disoriented and would possibly not survive freezing temperatures.

Pet owners are encouraged to make sure that pets have secure collars and updated identification tags, and to verify that microchip information is current. The sheler also recommend checking gates, fences and doors for weak spots, especially with guests coming and going.

To help reduce anxiety, experts suggest keeping pets inside in a quiet interior room, using steady background noise such as television or radio to mask fireworks, and having vet-approved calming tools available, including anxiety wraps or medications when appropriate.

Advocates say staying close to pets when possible can also make a difference.

“A little preparation now can save a life later,” rescue officials said, encouraging the public to plan ahead to help keep pets safe during New Year’s celebrations.
