MERIDIAN, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – A new golf tournament aimed at supporting children with dyslexia will tee off later this month in Meridian.
The inaugural “Bogeys and Stogies” tournament is scheduled for Friday, March 20, at Lakeview Golf Course. The event begins with an 8 a.m. gathering and breakfast, followed by a 9 a.m. shotgun start. The format will be a two-man scramble, and registration is $40 per player.
Proceeds from the tournament will benefit the Illuminations Center for Dyslexia’s scholarship fund, which helps families afford specialized therapy services.
Leta Palmiter, executive director of the center, said therapy for dyslexia can be costly because it involves highly trained therapists working one-on-one with students. While the center offers services on a sliding scale, fundraising efforts help bridge the financial gap for families in need.
Since opening in 2013, Illuminations has served more than 750 students across East Mississippi and West Alabama, as well as students in multiple states and countries through online and hybrid programs. The center provides instruction in reading, writing, spelling and math, along with test preparation and teacher training. A formal dyslexia diagnosis is not required for students to receive assistance.
Palmiter said the tournament is designed to be welcoming to golfers of all skill levels, with prizes planned for first, second and even last place.
Brian Richardson, owner of Queen City Cigar and a tournament partner, said registration is available at the Cigar Lounge, by phone or through the event’s Facebook page. Promotional materials also include a QR code for easy sign-up.
Organizers said the event will feature food, beverages and on-course activities designed to create a relaxed and entertaining atmosphere while raising funds for literacy services.
In addition to tournament participation, the center is seeking donations, volunteers and book contributions to support its programs. More information is available at illuminationsdyslexia.com.
