LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – Nearly 200 students and community volunteers are expected to participate in a roadway clean-up effort in Lauderdale County this week as part of a partnership between Meridian Waste Mississippi and West Lauderdale High School.
The Lauderdale County Community Clean-Up Day, sponsored by Meridian Waste Mississippi, will include about 175 students from West Lauderdale High School’s Career and Technical Education (CTE) program, along with local officials, volunteers and company employees.
Participants will clean roadways around West Lauderdale High School and along the corridor between the Collinsville four-way stop and the school campus.
The cleanup is scheduled for March 18 from 8:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. CDT, with students and volunteers working in staggered groups so students do not miss the entire school day.
Students involved in the school’s CTE program will gain hands-on experience in community service and environmental responsibility while working alongside county officials and industry representatives.
“Community partnerships like this are an important way to engage students and support a cleaner environment,” said Jimmie Moore, Meridian Waste’s Director of Governmental Affairs for Mississippi. “We’re proud to work with Lauderdale County and West Lauderdale High School to encourage students to take pride in keeping their community clean.”
The cleanup initiative was organized with help from Daniel Mabry, Lauderdale County solid waste code enforcement officer, and Rush Mayatt, Lauderdale County road manager. County Supervisor Josh Todd, Lauderdale County personnel and Meridian Waste employees are also expected to participate.
Drivers traveling in the area during the cleanup are encouraged to use caution and remain alert for students and volunteers working along roadways, organizers said.
Following the cleanup, Meridian Waste will host a recognition lunch March 19 at West Lauderdale High School for participating students and volunteers. The company will also provide bottled water during the cleanup activities.
Photos and highlights from the event will be shared on social media to recognize the students and the partnership between Lauderdale County, West Lauderdale High School and Meridian Waste.
