The Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks is reminding residents to help stop the spread of aquatic invasive species while spending time on Mississippi waterways during National Fishing and Boating Week.
MDWFP said boaters and anglers can help protect waterways by cleaning, draining and drying boats and recreational equipment between trips.
The department encourages residents to clean visible plants and debris from boats and equipment, drain water from boats, bilges, live wells and bait containers before leaving a waterbody, and dry boats and equipment before using them again.
Anglers are also encouraged to dispose of unwanted bait and fish parts in the trash before leaving the waterway.
Officials said the simple steps can help safeguard Mississippi’s lakes, rivers and other waterways from invasive species.
