JACKSON – A kitten is safe after being rescued from a storm drain in Jackson following a dayslong effort involving the Animal Rescue Fund of Mississippi and Jackson Water, according to the rescue.

The Animal Rescue Fund of Mississippi said it was contacted after people had spent three days trying unsuccessfully to free the kitten from the drain.
When rescuers arrived, they determined they needed additional help and called Jackson Water to assist with opening a nearby manhole.
The rescue said the kitten was trapped between the storm drain and the manhole in several inches of water and appeared frightened, cold, wet and dehydrated.
Workers and rescuers tried multiple methods to coax the kitten toward them, including using a plumbing snake to gently encourage it to move, according to the group.
Eventually, rescuers played recorded sounds of a mother cat calling her kitten. The rescue said that drew the kitten close enough for one of the rescuers to grab it safely.
The kitten, later named Raphael after the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, was taken back to the shelter for care.
The rescue said Raphael is now stable and beginning his recovery.
