Salvation Army deploys disaster response teams as Hurricane Isaias approaches Gulf Coast

The Salvation Army is deploying disaster response resources to the Gulf Coast as Hurricane Isaias moves toward landfall near the Alabama-Florida state line.

According to the Salvation Army’s Alabama, Louisiana and Mississippi Division, Isaias strengthened to a Category 3 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 120 mph.

The organization said forecasters expected the storm to weaken to a Category 2 hurricane before making landfall late Friday night or early Saturday morning.

Mobile feeding units from Mississippi and Alabama, along with supplies and an Incident Management Team, are scheduled to deploy to Mobile on Sunday.

Additional emergency disaster services teams and equipment are also on standby.

The Salvation Army Team Emergency Radio Network, known as SATERN, is activating Friday and is expected to operate around the clock through at least Sunday.

The organization is urging residents to stay informed, follow official weather guidance and check on neighbors as the storm moves through the region.
