LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – As two major elections approach, the Lauderdale County Circuit Clerk’s office is emphasizing the importance of reviewing voter registration cards to ensure voters are aware of their district and polling locations. With elections for House of Representatives District 82, as well as the Mayor and City Council elections, coming up in quick succession, voters are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the specifics outlined on their voter registration cards.
The special election for House of Representatives District 82 will take place on March 25, with voting occurring in County precincts. However, only 13 out of 37 precincts in the county are eligible to vote in this race. Additionally, four of those precincts are “split” precincts, which means voters may need to verify which district they are in before casting their ballots.
The split precincts include:
- Precinct 101 – Trinity Presbyterian (also includes District 83)
- Precinct 206 – Velma Young (also includes District 45)
- Precinct 415 – Church of the Mediator (also includes District 83)
- Precinct 544 – Meehan (also includes District 81)
Voters in these precincts should ensure they are voting in the correct district. If your card lists one of the other districts above, you are not eligible to vote in the House Representative 82 Special Election.
For the upcoming city elections, voters should check their registration cards for their City Ward precinct location to vote in the primary on April 1. Mayor and City Council elections will be held on this day, and voters are reminded to refer to their new voter registration card for updated ward and precinct information.
Additionally, the Marion Mayor and Alderman election is scheduled for June 3.
Absentee Voting Hours
- House of Representatives District 82: Absentee voting will be available on March 22 from 8:00 a.m. to noon at the County Government Complex located on 22nd Avenue for voters unable to visit during regular office hours.
- Mayor and City Council: Absentee voting for the City election will be available on March 22 and the final deadline, March 29, from 8:00 a.m. to noon at City Hall.
Redistricting Reminder
In accordance with new redistricting laws, the City of Meridian has completed its redistricting efforts, and all registered voters were mailed new voter registration cards reflecting updated Ward and precinct locations. Voters are responsible for keeping their address information updated to ensure they are properly listed in the pollbook. Those who did not receive a new voter registration card should contact the Circuit Clerk’s office at 601-485-1946 to verify their information.
April 22 Runoff Election
If necessary, runoff elections for both the City and House Representative races will be held on April 22. Voters will need to visit different precinct locations for each election, so it is especially important to consult their voter registration card to avoid confusion.
Voter Registration Cards
Voter registration cards do not expire, but voters will receive a new card whenever there is an update or change in their information. Voters are encouraged to destroy any previous cards to avoid confusion when they receive a new one.
