Meridian Police to Increase Patrols Over Memorial Day Weekend

MERIDIAN, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – The Meridian Police Department is set to increase its visibility throughout the city during Memorial Day weekend, with targeted enforcement efforts planned over the three-day holiday period.

“Citizens can expect to see a larger than normal police presence as well as safety checkpoints starting Friday, May 23, through Monday, May 26,” Acting Captain Dareall Thompson said Thursday.

Officers will be focused on enforcing a range of traffic and safety laws, including speed violations, seatbelt use under the Click-It-or-Ticket campaign, driving under the influence (DUI), and distracted driving. Additional criminal enforcement will also be in effect.

“MPD is dedicated to making the roadways safe for residents and visitors through education and enforcement,” Thompson said.

The increased patrols are part of the department’s annual effort to reduce traffic-related incidents during one of the busiest travel weekends of the year.

Memorial Day, which falls on Monday, May 26, marks the unofficial start of summer and is often associated with increased travel and outdoor activities.

Residents are encouraged to plan ahead, wear seatbelts, and avoid impaired or distracted driving.
