Meridian officials urge residents to stay off roads as flooding hits city Tuesday evening

MERIDIAN, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – City officials in Meridian urged residents to stay off the roads Tuesday night as widespread flooding impacted multiple areas following severe weather.

Emergency crews responded to rising flood waters across the city, with authorities warning that flooded roadways pose significant and unpredictable dangers, including fast-moving water, hidden debris and damaged pavement.

“Our priority is the safety of our residents,” Mayor Percy Bland said in a statement. “We’re asking everyone to remain where they are, avoid travel, and allow our first responders to do their work safely and efficiently. Tonight is about safety.”

Police, fire and public works crews were actively monitoring conditions and responding to calls as needed, officials said.

Authorities reminded residents not to attempt to drive through standing or moving water and to heed road closures and barricades. Officials also emphasized the safety message often used during flooding events: “Turn around, don’t drown.”

City leaders encouraged residents to follow local weather coverage and official City of Meridian communication channels for real-time updates as conditions continue to evolve.

Residents can report flooding or related issues by calling 601-485-1965. In emergencies, officials said to call 911.

Photos and videos submitted by residents show flooding across several neighborhoods and roadways throughout the city.
