PRESS RELEASE
The Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Department, in cooperation with other law enforcement agencies, conducted a facility-wide sweep of the Lauderdale County Detention Center early Wednesday June 24 to find and seize contraband and other illegal items.
As the operator of the Detention Facility, the Sheriff’s Department has a responsibility to keep the facility safe and secure for both offenders and staff, and Wednesday’s action is a direct example of the department fulfilling that obligation.
Periodic searches are good proactive measures that help law enforcement locate and remove dangerous contraband from the detention facility before it becomes a larger problem. Several rule violations were discovered and appropriately handled. No illegal items were found. At this time no additional criminal charges are forthcoming.
The Sheriff’s Department extends its thanks to the numerous law enforcement officers and partner agencies who assisted with the search. In addition to Lauderdale County deputies and detention officers, agencies taking part include:
– Kemper County Sheriff’s Department
– Newton County Sheriff’s Department
– Mississippi Department of Public Safety Special Operations Group
– Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics
