Amtrak train catches fire approaching Meridian Union Station

MERIDIAN, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – Emergency crews responded to Meridian Union Station on Monday afternoon after leaves and tree limbs caught in the brakes of an Amtrak train sparked a small fire as the train approached the station, according to Lauderdale County Emergency Management Agency Director Odie Barrett.

Smoke was reported coming from underneath the train as it approached Union Station, prompting a response from the Meridian Fire Department.

Barrett said old limbs and leaves had accumulated around the train’s brakes. The debris caught fire as the train was braking to stop in Meridian.

Firefighters arrived within minutes and extinguished the fire using a couple of pump cans, Barrett said.

No injuries were reported, and the situation had returned to normal by about 4:15 p.m. Train operations were continuing as usual.

Agencies responding to the incident included the Lauderdale County Emergency Management Agency, Meridian Fire Department, Meridian Public Safety, Meridian Police Department and Metro Ambulance Service.

No additional information was immediately available.
