Auburn Football Chaplain Rev. Chette Williams Dies in Lake Martin Tragedy

ELMORE COUNTY, Ala. (WDNews) – Rev. Chette Williams, longtime chaplain for Auburn University’s football team, died Sunday evening after falling into the water at Lake Martin.

The incident occurred near Kowaliga Restaurant, just west of the Kowaliga Bridge in Elmore County. Authorities say Williams slipped and fell while attempting to board a boat after learning the restaurant was closed for a private event, according to Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin.

Williams’ body was recovered around 7:20 p.m., the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) confirmed Monday. The body has been sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy.

Williams, 61, had served as Auburn’s football chaplain for 24 years. A former Auburn linebacker, he was also the campus director for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) and the State Director for Urban Ministries for FCA.

Multiple agencies assisted in the search and recovery efforts, including the Elmore County Sheriff’s Office, Kowaliga Volunteer Fire Department, Red Hill Volunteer Fire Department, Real Island Volunteer Fire Department, and troopers with ALEA’s Highway Patrol Division.

ALEA’s Marine Patrol Division is leading the investigation.
