LAUDERDALE COUNTY, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – The West Lauderdale Knights moved one step closer to a state title Tuesday after defeating the Purvis Tornadoes in Game 1 of the MHSAA Class 4A State Championship Series, with 10th grader Xavier Thompson emerging as a key contributor.

Thompson gave the Knights a 2-1 lead with a sacrifice fly to left field in the fourth inning, a lead that held for the remainder of the game. The sophomore has been a difference-maker in the postseason, also delivering the game-winning hit in West Lauderdale’s North State Championship victory over Newton County on May 18.

The Knights are aiming for their first state title since the 2020–21 season. This year marks their first return to the championship series since 2023, when they finished as runner-up after falling to the same Purvis team they now face in a high-stakes rematch.

Tuesday’s win featured a complete game performance on the mound from Ridge Brown, who navigated several scoring threats by the Tornadoes to keep the Knights in control.

West Lauderdale’s roster includes several experienced upperclassmen who were part of the 2023 squad. Their leadership, combined with emerging talent like Thompson, has helped carry the Knights back to Trustmark Park with momentum and purpose.

Game 2 of the best-of-three series is scheduled for Thursday at 1:07 p.m. in Pearl. A win would secure the Knights’ first state championship in four seasons and cap off a postseason defined by resilience, redemption, and timely execution.
