Polls open across Mississippi for primary elections

MISSISSIPPI – Voters across Mississippi are heading to the polls Tuesday for the state’s congressional primary elections.

The primaries will determine party nominees for one U.S. Senate seat and all four of Mississippi’s seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. Candidates who win their respective party nominations will advance to the November general election.

Polling places across the state opened at 7 a.m. and will remain open until 7 p.m., according to state election officials. Mississippi law requires voters to present a valid photo identification in order to cast a ballot.

Mississippi operates under an open primary system, allowing voters to choose either a Democratic or Republican ballot regardless of party affiliation. However, voters may participate in only one party’s primary.

Election officials encourage voters to verify their polling locations before heading to vote. Residents can find their polling place by visiting the Mississippi Secretary of State’s website atsos.ms.gov and using the “My Election Day” lookup tool.

If no candidate receives a majority of the vote in a contested primary race, a runoff election will be held at a later date. Winners of the primaries will move on to the November general election, where voters will decide who will represent Mississippi in Congress.
