WAYNE COUNTY – The identification of a woman found in the Chickasawhay River Monday afternoon will be left to the Gulf Coast Crime Lab, according to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office.
Wayne County Sheriff Jerry Mosley said three young men were boating on the river when they spotted a body tangled in branches about a half-mile from the boat ramp off Mississippi Highway 184.
According to Mosley, investigators have only been able to confirm the victim’s gender so far. He said the body had been in the water for some time, which has distorted many identifying features, and that he did not want to speculate on details that the crime lab would need to confirm through its own examination.
Mosley said there were no obvious signs of trauma on the body.
Mississippi Wildlife and Fisheries, Wayne County Emergency Management and Wayne General Hospital helped with the recovery.
The sheriff’s office is asking anyone with information about the woman’s identity, or how she ended up in the river, to call 601-735-3801.
