Jackson County deputies seek witnesses, photos in Horn Island death investigation

Nolan Xavier Wells

JACKSON COUNTY — The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is asking the public for help as investigators continue working to determine what happened to Nolan Wells, who was last seen alive on Horn Island on July 4.

In a press release Tuesday, the sheriff’s office said investigators are actively examining the circumstances surrounding Wells’ death and are urging anyone with firsthand information to come forward.

Authorities acknowledged that “a significant amount of information, speculation, and commentary” has circulated on social media and throughout the community, but emphasized that investigators are relying on eyewitness accounts, physical evidence and other reliable information to establish the facts.

Investigators are specifically asking anyone who was on or near Horn Island on July 4 to contact the sheriff’s office if they have:

  • Information about interactions with, sightings of or statements regarding Nolan Wells.
  • Original, unedited photos or videos taken on the northwest tip of Horn Island, particularly those showing alleged altercations or containing images of Wells. Investigators said original media often contains critical details that could be essential to the investigation.
  • Information about any arguments, disturbances or other unusual activity observed or heard on the island that day.

The sheriff’s office said even details that may seem insignificant could prove valuable to investigators.

Authorities also asked the public to refrain from spreading unverified information that could hinder the investigation.

“Our thoughts, prayers, and condolences remain with Nolan Wells’ family during this difficult time,” the release states. “We respectfully ask the public to extend compassion and privacy to his loved ones as investigators continue working diligently to determine exactly what occurred.”

Anyone with information, photos or videos related to the investigation is asked to contact the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division at 228-769-3065 during regular business hours or 228-769-3063 after hours.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
