Kathryn Dreifuss, a senior at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), is bringing her capstone film project Whispers From The Woods to life — and she’s doing it on Choctaw Tribal lands, where her story began.
A proud member of the Pearl River Choctaw community, Kathryn is earning her BFA in Film & Television at SCAD. Her upcoming short film is more than a creative endeavor — it’s a powerful act of cultural preservation and advocacy. Through Whispers From The Woods, Kathryn shines a light on the ongoing crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Peoples (MMIP), while celebrating Choctaw stories, spirituality, and resilience.
Set to film October 25–26, 2025, on Choctaw Tribal Lands in Mississippi, Whispers From The Woods tells the story of Nettie, an elder haunted by the disappearance of her sister decades earlier. When Nettie’s granddaughter vanishes under eerily similar circumstances, she is forced to confront ancient myths, hard truths, and a legacy of silence that echoes through generations.
Kathryn’s journey as a filmmaker began at Neshoba Central High School, where she co-founded the Video Club and served as a digital media intern, videographer, and editor. During the pandemic, she produced informative videos for the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians and helped educate her community in a time of crisis. Since then, she has interned with the Office of Public Information and led creative projects for the Choctaw Indian Fair and local tourism initiatives.
Now, as she approaches her senior year capstone, Kathryn is inviting the community to support her vision. Donations of any amount will help fund the film’s production, empowering an Indigenous filmmaker to tell stories that matter.
