Southeast Veterans Day Program Honors Local Heroes for 31st Year

MERIDIAN, Miss. (Queen City Newsfeed) – Veterans gathered in the gym at Southeast Lauderdale High School on Friday morning. They came for the 31st annual Southeast Veterans Day program. The school held the event to say thank you to those who served.

During the ceremony, the school honored veterans and current service members. In addition, their spouses and parents were recognized. After all, families serve too while their loved ones are away.

A Tradition That Started With One Principal

Former Southeast principal Algie Davis started the program. He has long spoken up for local veterans. In fact, Davis started it in 1995 with help from five of his students, WTOK reported in 2023.

Since then, the program has grown into a yearly tradition for the Southeast community.

Music, a Meal and a Thank You

This year, the program kept its tradition going. First, musical guests performed for the crowd. Then, the honorees sat down for a catered lunch.

Veterans Day falls on Wednesday, Nov. 11. So, Southeast held its program a few days early.

How You Can Say Thank You

Do you know a veteran? Next week is a good time to thank them. Also, many schools, churches and veterans groups across East Central Mississippi will hold their own events. Check with your local school or veterans group for times.
