JACKSON — Governor Tate Reeves said Monday that Mississippi continues to respond to a severe winter storm that has left two people dead, dozens injured, and roughly 153,000 residents without power across the state.
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency reported one fatality in Hinds County and one in Tishomingo County. Two additional injuries have been reported in Hinds and Smith counties. Officials said life safety remains the state’s top priority.
The storm has affected at least 47 counties and the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians. Damage assessments are ongoing, and state, local, federal, and private partners, including FEMA, are providing assistance. FEMA has deployed 30 generators along with fuel, and MEMA is distributing generators, bottled water, meals, cots, and blankets to impacted areas.
Roads remain hazardous due to ice, debris, and downed power lines, hampering power restoration efforts. Mississippi Department of Transportation crews are working to clear roadways in coordination with utility companies, while power crews continue restoring service.
Officials warned that dangerous cold is expected through Tuesday morning and urged residents to stay home, avoid travel, and seek shelter if needed. More than 60 warming centers are open statewide.
Preliminary reports show storm damage in Adams, Alcorn, Attala, Bolivar, Calhoun, Carroll, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Claiborne, Clarke, Clay, Coahoma, Desoto, Grenada, Hinds, Holmes, Humphries, Itawamba, Jefferson, Lafayette, Leake, Leflore, Lowndes, Marshall, Monroe, Newton, Oktibbeha, Panola, Pontotoc, Prentiss, Quitman, Rankin, Sharkey, Smith, Sunflower, Tallahatchie, Tate, Tippah, Tishomingo, Tunica, Union, Warren, Washington, Webster, Wilkinson, Yalobusha, and Yazoo counties.
Residents are encouraged to file insurance claims, document property damage with photos, and report storm-related damage to their county or MEMA using the agency’s self-report tool. The assessment process is ongoing, and the state will deploy additional resources as needed to help communities recover.
