Ice has forced traffic to stop on portions of Interstate 55 and Interstate 22 in North Mississippi, according to an update from the Mississippi Department of Transportation.

MDOT said that as of 9 a.m. Wednesday, traffic was stopped in both directions on I-55 from DeSoto County to Panola County because of icy conditions.

Traffic on I-22 was also blocked in both directions from the Mississippi state line to Myrtle in Union County.

MDOT said it continued to receive reports of ice on roads and bridges in 28 counties: Alcorn, Benton, Bolivar, Calhoun, Coahoma, DeSoto, Grenada, Humphreys, Issaquena, Lafayette, Lee, Leflore, Marshall, Panola, Pontotoc, Prentiss, Quitman, Sharkey, Sunflower, Tallahatchie, Tate, Tippah, Tishomingo, Tunica, Union, Washington, Yalobusha and Yazoo.

Transportation officials urged drivers to stay off roadways affected by winter weather unless there is an emergency. MDOT said the MDOT Traffic app and MDOTtraffic.com have the most up-to-date information on road conditions.
